Chris Yates

We at Youth Action like to see our volunteers succeed and also get their opinion on Volunteering with us, please have a read through what Chris one of our admin volunteers had to say about their experience so far.

 Hi, I’m Chris Yates and I’ve been volunteering at Youth Action’s Blackburn office as an administrative assistant since March last year.

When the idea of volunteering was first suggested to me by the job centre, I was a little unsure.  I never really considered myself a “people person”; however since I was first interviewed by Shane I have been made welcome by everyone.

The position itself is ideal for me, being epileptic I need an indoor, less hazardous work environment but that isn’t all a volunteer has in their favour here.  It’s also the flexibility offered by all the staff that I’ve found really helpful.  There is a no pressure approach by all who work here, not to mention friendly office banter which makes even repetitive tasks fly by.

From a working point of view, I hope to volunteer for the foreseeable future, it’s quite surprising the number of computer skills and basic office practices you can forget while you are out of work.  That isn’t all; recently I have been given the opportunity to play a small teaching role for those in the local community.  The skills I take for granted could prove very useful to others, let’s hope they think so too!

Some of my highlights from the last 8 months include the Fusion Awards (and our win!), and also seeing the reaction of young people at the NCS Graduation.

 The Ideal Volunteer

I never really asked myself the question before, but now that I do I find it more difficult than I had thought.  I suppose the first and most obvious answer would be a volunteer is someone who does something for nothing.  However, there’s more to it than that.  A great volunteer to me would be someone who gives not only their time, but their energy and full personality into their cause.  There are lots of quotes, some may even say clichés, which come to mind when you mention volunteering to someone;

  • Changing Lives
  • Making a difference
  • Helping your community
  • Boosting your CV
